I like to get up early to exercise and make the most of my mornings as it helps me to prepare to tackle my day ahead. The energy boost I get from walking on the beach with my dog is part of my regular exercise to keep body, soul and mind fit and healthy.

It is also a time where I practice gratitude and appreciate the beautiful skies and sunrises – Jersey is a wonderful place to live with the most spectacular beaches. Breathing in the fresh sea air, whilst watching nature at its best, is something I relish each day.

A good bout of exercising in the morning encourages the body to burn fat, stimulates the senses, gets the melatonin turned down and the cortisol turned up – I am ready to go, and I feel strong and healthy. And I get to spend time with our much-loved four-legged family dog Muffin, who is so much fun that I return home in a good and light mood.

It is easy to get out of the habit but I find keeping to a routine so beneficial. We lead such busy lives that exercise can be overlooked, but it should be a daily priority and I try to stick to it as it keeps me on track. And once you`ve got it over and done with, you can crack on with everything else.

I was involved in a project this year in the UK on a ‘very tight budget`. A bit of thought and time can make all the difference to your property, whether renting or selling, it has to appeal from the start.  
Did you know that our minds are made up within the first 15 seconds of seeing a property? First impressions count more than you realise.
What we did:
1.	Cleaned up the entrance
2.	Removed the paving slabs 
3.	Simple property maintenance - brushing the moss from the porch roof and removing grass and weeds from gutters
4.	For a more modern uplift, the dark brown stained timber was simply painted in black stain, the drab brown gutters and downpipes changed for black, fascias in white – look how much sharper and modern the end result is! 
5.	Look at the front door, the subtle change from grubby white to a grey/green is so much more inviting and the door looks like new
6.	Final touch, welcoming pots of plants on offer from the local D.I.Y store
Clearing, cleaning and careful use of some paint colour is all that it takes to transform this rather drab run down home into a welcoming place you would want to live in.

I love making dressings. It saves money on expensive shop-bought varieties, tastes so much better and it makes a perfect gift too. Whilst traveling in Corfu this summer, I made bottles of it using locally grown organic oil, rosemary and garlic – so easy and so delicious.

Here is my easy and very quick Chilli Oil recipe:
Ingredients: 
1 liter of Extra Virgin Olive 
2 to 4 mild red chillies or at least 1 to 2 tsps dried chillies – depends on personal taste 
2 to 3 fat garlic cloves 
Fresh herbs – such as thyme or rosemary, the latter is my favourite

Method:
1. Heat the garlic the chilli flakes or the chillies (reserving one) plus a sprig of rosemary in the oil very gently, as gently as your hob will allow until it starts to very slightly bubble 
2. Leave on heat for 2 or 3 minutes, the garlic slices will float to the top and begin to sizzle, but do not overheat or allow to boil. 

Tip: If olive oil overheats, it kills the flavour as it has a low smoke point and once reached the oils breakdown and reduce the health benefits of the vitamin E and antioxidants. In fact never use olive oil for high temperature cooking, far better to use something like rapeseed oil with a higher smoke point. Anyway, back to the chilli oil dressing!

3. Leave to cool in the pan, remove the spent rosemary stem and any detached leaves and pour into 2x500ml decorative bottles, let the infused chilli and one or two garlic slices into bottle as well.

.4. Add a fresh sprig of rosemary and a chilli pepper to each bottle. May be used immediately but best left for 1 to 2 weeks to infuse.

Don`t be afraid to make it hot and spicy, you only need a few drops to pep up a pasta dish or risotto, sprinkle over grilled chicken or pizza – what ever takes your fancy.

My family especially loves it over Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall`s oven-baked risotto with shallots and mushrooms – we are all massive fans of his cooking.

Lighting is often overlooked, even at the planning stage of the build. Optimising the use of natural light and complementing it with the right artificial light, both inside and outside the home, is one of the most important elements of good interior design.

I quite often despair at the number of badly designed lighting systems I see in Jersey homes, largely through the lack of proper planning, but also because of changing needs and functions of each room and the challenge faced by the limited choice available locally.

I have made quite a few changes to the lighting in my own home; I can only think that the architect was away the day the lighting system was designed and again when it was installed! The lack of choice in Jersey has often meant compromise in the past, but no longer thanks to the World Wide Web!

Lighting is the finishing touch to any interior and exterior scheme; it not only creates ambience and comfort, but is needed for safety and has to be thought through to the finest details. I am a determined person and was not to be beaten by the lack of choice, the poor design of my house and the fairly tight budget I was working to, so I sourced and sourced and found some amazing online stores who deliver quickly and efficiently to Jersey.

Here are my top three, and whatever my needs, one of these always has the perfect solution:
www.jim-lawrence.co.uk – a family run business, born out of a farm forge making candlesticks for friends. Their designer quality lights are stunning and offer timeless elegant lighting options. The staff are super friendly and very helpful.

www.pooky.com – have quirky and an amazing variety of very affordable lighting. They are inspiring and have a great blog for some tips and ideas. I am always impressed how speedily they arrive!

www.dowsingandreynolds.com – I like them for their industrial style, caged and vintage lights as well as lighting components to make up your own lighting, plus all sorts of bulbs, shades and other hip hardware. They have a very useful source of vintage filament bulbs in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Very reasonably priced and they offer quick delivery too.
